Ideas of Ageing

For this part of the assignment I am going to be describing two ideas of aging. Firstly I am describing the Disengagement theory and then the experience theory. I will then be comparing the similarities and differences between the two, and in addition writing up two case studies of older people and explain the development that occurs in older existence, relating back to the hypotheses I will include discussed. Firstly the theory of Social Disengagement, disengagement means a person's withdrawal from involvement with nearly anything. The theory was first put forward by simply two authors Cumming and Henry around 1962 who thought that it was natural for older people to take away from cultural involvement with others, as a result of having constrained opportunities to connect to other people. There are many issues that limit social interaction which results in disengagement. Some of these could possibly be things like pension, ill overall health, mobility, travel around or technology. The theory of disengagement was widely approved as other theorists such as Bromley (1974) agreed together with the theory quarrelling that " although some people fight the process all the way, disengagement of some type is bound to come, simply because older people have nor the physical not the mental assets they had after they were youthful. ” Secondly the Activity theory, this theory argues that older people need to stay emotionally and socially active to limit the potential risks of disengagement. Being active in old life will help people to defeat many of the problems they will have to endure over the older lifestage. Being active can include involved in sports and activities, getting started with clubs and groups to go on trips, trips, holidays and simple items like continuing with hobbies including gardening or perhaps walking your dog. Being lively is very important for many reasons every time a person with the later years of life. It can be believed that must be not enough to simple offer facilities for older people...
