Saint Lucia’s Folk Lifestyle and the Struggles for Emancipation Research Paper

ST . LUCIAS PEOPLE CULTURE PLUS THE STRUGGLES INTENDED FOR EMANCIPATION By Travis Weekes My primary motivation for researching the contents of the paper stems from my curiosity about the origin and development of several of St . Lucias most attractive and persistent ethnical forms. Forms which I believe have been and are still very instrumental in the healthy diet of the St . Lucian person forms like the bele, the konte, the abwe, the flower festivals of La Rose and La Maguerite and of course the language Kweyol, which in turn emerged being a vehicle of the people forms. Harold Simmons, St Lucias groundbreaking anthropologist laid the research for ongoing research in these areas and Monsignor Patrick Anthony, through the organization of the Persons Research Centre ensured the survival appealing into all those forms. Small research even so has been performed into the origins and advancement those varieties. The details up to now do not say enough about who we are. For some St . Lucias folk traditions is African. For others it is a mixture of Amerindian, French, British, African, East Indian and so forth Not only happen to be these answers too standard but due to this, they do not adequately contextualize the introduction of the lifestyle within historical events, happenings and phenomena and consequently there is little fiel analysis. When I carried out the research for this newspaper I was the Cultural Education Officer in the Folk Research Centre and part of my personal duties to educate the community regarding St . Lucias culture. To the end We used which ever resources were available in the tiny library on the centre and my own experience of field work into the countryside communities on the island. Although my paper is approximately St . Lucia I will talk about the surrounding islands, particularly St . Vincent mainly because what I found out about Uk or People from france colonial coverage was in a way that in the period of colonization, they often dealt with the hawaiian islands en cuadernillo particularly if these people were similar with regards to geography, topography and demography as was your case with St . Lucia and St Vincent. Throughout the colonial wars for the Caribbean, St Lucia was the most strategic of spots. Its secure and concealed harbours coupled with its abounding resources of wood and water provided the necessary haven for boats of anxious European people. This may be the dominant reason the French and British fought constantly, changing hands 18 times to get the island. From the inception of European dangerous protrusion into the Caribbean, they attempted to enslave the native peoples to work on servant plantations. The Carib settlers at the time in the smaller destinations of the Caribbean resisted all attempts by the Europeans to build colonies during these territories. Various preferred for taking their own lives than experience exploitation by Europeans. Others used their particular knowledge and mastery in the sea tracks among the islands to run away from one island to the next searching for refuge. Having failed while using Caribs, Europeans imported pressured African time to work with the farms. The development of the slave planting system, with a highly intensive and profitable trade in African slaves was supposed to produce at the maximum. European rivalry pertaining to the Carribbean islands was as extreme as the rapid advancement the planting system as well as the harshest of measures was used by the Europeans to protect their interests. Just like the indigenous peoples, African slaves resisted almost all attempts in subjugation. Captivity was vicious and inhumane and for this kind of simple cause there was usually maroonage. Both Caribs and runaway African slaves designed a common relationship in their amount of resistance against Western exploitation. Slaves fled the estates if he or she had they will got the opportunity despite the fact that the punishments whenever they were found were intense. The Windward Islands had been then actually far more then simply than now, thickly wooded with substantial mountains and ridges generally leading from end from the island for the other. Africa...
